Title: Job Requirements 1/1 (**)
Characters: Andy, Ianto, Gwen
Rating/Warning: PG
Spoilers: Spoilers for 2.11 and 2.12
Disclaimer: Everything belongs to the BBC and RTD – I’m just borrowing them and I promise I’ll return them (mostly) unharmed.
Summary: Andy asks Ianto to meet him for a coffee. Slightly cracky-madness I tell thee.
Author's Notes:
OK - one of the things that I've seen around a fair few times since Fragments aired was disbelief that Ianto could be an average student, not have attended university and still ended up at Torchwood 1 - I've even seen suggestions that he must have doctored his files (with no logical answer why he'd do this and make himself less employable in the process). Mainly this is because people don't think Torchwood 1 would have employed him with the description Jack gave us. Here's a slightly edited version of something I wrote about this in a comment:
"From the information we get in that scene, all that Jack has access to is Ianto's educational record, criminal record and employment record. How revealing would that really be?
And seriously how well you did at school is not an accurate portrayal of how clever you are. Albert Einstein didn't do well at school during his teens because he "clashed with authorities and resented the school regimen".
There are many, many reasons that Ianto may not have done his best at school, without making him "stupid". Lack of challenge, troubled childhood, not suited to standardised testing, had other responsibilities that distracted him, was a typical teenage boy... And I'm starting to get frustrated how many people seem to think this demeans him in some way. To me it makes him more interesting. Think of all the fun ways he might have arrived at Torchwood.
Also I don't think Torchwood London would require a degree. Torchwood 1 was a) a large employer, with around 1000 people working there according to the website and b) a very unusual employer with unusual demands. There were certainly specialist roles that needed special degrees - but not all of them would have done. I would imagine other qualities would be much more valued. For example, the ability to act quickly, think on your feet and deal with the idea of aliens (not to mention the ability to keep secrets). So far I've not seen any degrees at university that strictly cover 'alien life forms and technology' - whoever comes to Torchwood is going to need training anyway, so recruitment might as well occur on many levels. Plus I'm certain there would be a certain amount of civilians stumbling across aliens and being recruited depending on their response - on top of people being recruited from universities."
This fic is a slightly silly attempt to play with some of these ideas. Plus I've wanted to write PC Andy and Ianto together in a scene for a while (alas I do not think I've done Andy justice). Unfortunately unbeta'd - all mistakes are my own.
Andy finished his cup of tea and thirstily eyed the coffee he’d bought for Ianto.
He’d decided to take the Torchwood thing into his own hands, mostly because if he was going to live in a city that had more weird goings on than Area 51 he wanted to be in the middle of it and only partly, he reassured himself, because he wanted to prove Gwen wrong.
Ianto slid into the seat opposite him with a disapproving look.
“I didn’t think you’d come,” Andy greeted him with a grin.
“It was the only way I could think of to stop you calling the emergency line,” Ianto replied.
“Sorry. I got you a cup of coffee,” he pointed out as a conciliatory gesture. Ianto picked it up, sniffed it and then pushed it aside.
“It is called the emergency line for a reason,” Ianto chided him.
“What? Did I tie up the line and make you miss an alien invasion?”
One of Ianto’s eyebrows twitched.
“Thankfully it was a very small invasion and they headed to Cross Hands by mistake so we were able to get there in time,” he told him severely, Andy laughed but Ianto frowned him back into silence.
“Cross Hands? The place in Carmarthenshire?” Andy joked after a second. “Hardly would have been a disaster if it’d been wiped out would it?”
“It may be a laughing matter for you; it would have been a major diplomatic incident for us. Thankfully we managed to get the aliens out before the locals did too much harm. Anyway what’s this about?”
“I want a job at Torchwood,” Andy told him and Ianto laughed. A short surprised, slightly unflattering, laugh.
“Right,” Ianto said gathering himself together. “Well I’m not sure how Gwen would feel about that.”
“Well it’s not up to her, is it?” Andy snapped.
“I suppose I could talk to Jack,” Ianto suggested. “But you’d have to apply through Torchwood’s traditional route, fulfil our job requirements.”
“But Gwen didn’t…”
“Well Gwen is Jack’s special project. He’s a stickler for the rules normally, he’ll occasionally let a genius like Tosh or Owen slip through because he needs their specialist skills. But for the likes of you and me…” Ianto waved his hands expressively.
“Alright. What job requirements?”
“You’ll need a specialist degree. Extraterrestrial Studies, Research and Analysis preferably.”
“What?”
“Spooky dos,” Ianto supplied.
“Where the hell do you study that then?” Andy asked.
“
“
“The course is accredited by the
“No, no… Look how long is this course?”
“Three years,” Ianto sat back down and grinned at him.
“Three… Right. And when I’ve done the three years, I can join Torchwood…”
“Of course, if you get top marks.”
Andy was silent for a few moments.
“What happens to the people who don’t?”
“We give them an amnesia pill; they never even remember they’ve been to
“What they just forget three years of their life?” Andy asked. “Isn’t that a bit weird?”
Ianto shrugged in response.
“Anyway,” he continued, his tone business like, “Would you say you thought of yourself as bisexual?”
“What? No,” Andy told him, moving back slightly.
“Oh,” Ianto’s tone clearly suggested that this was a problem.
“Well we could work on that once you’ve got the job. I could help you work on that if you wanted,” Ianto spoke slowly and then smiled at him. Andy’s mind froze for a moment and then all too quickly kicked back into action.
“Wait? Are you saying that Gwen…”
“This isn’t going to work is it, Andy?” Ianto interrupted him.
“You were never going to let me in, were you?”
“Nope,” Ianto stood to leave.
“Then why the hell tell me all that?”
“I’d already put the amnesia pill in your tea, I thought I should make it worth while.” He headed for the door of the café.
“Wait,” Andy called after him and Ianto looked back for a moment, “I’d already drunk my tea before you got here.”
“We work in unusual ways.”
* * * * *
Gwen was waiting for him outside in his car.
“Any luck?” She asked as Ianto slid into the driver’s seat.
“Well I told him that to get a job at Torchwood you need to spend three years studying in
“Well that should put him off,” Gwen laughed. They both watched as Andy scurried from the café, his face red.
"I told him we'd given him retcon as well, just to worry him. Oh and he now thinks that bisexuality isn’t an optional part of Torchwood's hiring policy.” Gwen paused for a second.
“Ianto Jones, have you told Andy that I like women?”
“Owen does still have that footage of you and Carys…”
“You are a cruel, cruel man,” Gwen giggled.
“Thank you,” she watched him for a second.
“You didn’t proposition him did you?”
“Maybe best if we don’t tell Jack about that part. I think he’d be far too amused.”
“Anyway how did you get recruited to Torchwood originally?” She asked as he started up the car.
“Long story.”
“Well it’s a long drive to my house,” she pointed out.
“Alright. I was working at this little coffee place in
“Alien?” Gwen interrupted.
“Yep. Anyway I fixed it and it turned out that it made absolutely fantastic coffee, slightly addictive… but fantastic.”
“Addictive?”
“It created rabid coffee zombies, they were practically ripping each other apart, the police had to close off
“That sounds more like the cue for a very long wait on the naughty step, not a job offer?” Gwen joked, Ianto smiled, his eyes fixed on the road.
“It turned out they already had one of these alien coffee do-hickeys, except nobody had worked out how to fix it. They thought it was some sort of personal time travelling space-time manipulator or something. So I got the job.”
“Ianto, the coffee machine in the Hub… that’s from Torchwood 1 right?” He grinned again but didn’t reply.
“How addictive?”

Heeeeeee. Poor Andy. And it is a job requirement, seriously.
And yay for Ianto and Gwen hanging out and being sneaky, and thank you, because now I don't have to bother with coming up with my own Ianto joining Torchwood personal canon, because that right there is utter genius. Alien coffee machine fixing wonder boy!
This is so funny and in-tone with the show, very nicely done.
And definitely - although I'm still undecided whether it's a requirement or just a consequence of working at Torchwood. ;)
I really rather love having Gwen and Ianto together - they are cute as friends. And I'm so glad the show hasn't gone for making them love rivals.
But - that's just one possible way Ianto could join Torchwood - I want everyone to go and make up lots more ways to keep me amused. ;D
I'm glad I brought the laughs. :p
:D
I'm glad you liked it. :D
A+ and three gold stars. :D
I was very miffed by the upset - because I loved the backstory.
However, I now have to take it all back because you gave me gold stars which means I is smartz right? ;p
“Maybe best if we don’t tell Jack about that part. I think he’d be far too amused.”
At first, I thought he was going to say Jack wouldn't be amused, but yes, he would be way too amused, LOL!
And I almost wrote it as 'Jack wouldn't like it' - and then stopped mid-typing as the sensible part of my brain kicked in and said "are you being serious - he'd love it".
It didn't take too much embracing as it was already part of my personal fanon, but I'm glad other people are liking the idea as well.
And yep, I think it explains as well, why Jack might have initially underestimated him (not for long I suspect).
~
I'm afraid I spent far too much time over the Easter weekend trawling Torchwood discussions and getting silently frustrated. But, yep exactly - you're not who you're going to be as a teenager, I mean Ianto was recruited when he was about 20 to Torchwood, he hadn't exactly had masses of time to choose life paths - I'm 24 and I still have no idea what I want to do. Plus, I sort of love that we're seeing him grow into his potential and that he didn't spring from the womb a genius. :D
:D
Thank you very much!
We need to fight the angst with liberal doses of silliness - it is the only way.
:D
:D
Hee. Thanks.
Very cute!
If it helps, my Ianto would quite like Andy to join the Torchwood team. Although mostly because he can't quite feel as much enjoyment from teasing Owen since Owen died.
;)
I had just taken a bite when I read
I grew up in an academic household. And that kind of discussion is SO accurate!
I never figured that Ianto had to have finished a degree or anything but I find it hard to believe there wasn't some effort on the part of Torchwood London to encourage researchers, even the junior-most of them, to take some work-related classes. Since nothing Jack said in his recitation of Ianto's CV prevents that from having been true (Yikes! What a sentence!) I think it's fair to say he's gotten some additional lernins somewhere along the line. But it also seems to me that Torchwood in its heyday likely looked for some fairly odd and esoteric things in staff, including street smarts and an open mind. Which, let's face it, the boy has in bushels...
That bit is almost directly from a conversation my brain had with itself when I realised the masters I was interested in was only available at Swindon Community College. Not sure how much credit I can take for that really.
I completely agree with you - Torchwood London would have been absolutely rife with in house training. And our boy is smartz.
Thanks :D
At least I would hope they had in-house training in some really relevant subjects. Although I think a few classes in Excel would have done him a world of good if they expected him to make his way in the world after Canary Wharf. Ghost Shift programming just doesn't seem like it would be a marketable skill after that....
(BTW, I'm looking into a Masters Program right now and just discovered that I need a bunch of prereqs that didn't exist when I was an undergrad. The only place I can get them is Portland Community College. Since I have have not only my Bachelor's degree but a second major's worth of post-grad coursework this is more than a little humiliating...) (Granted, I'm pretty sure what you're calling a Masters degree is different from what I'm calling a Master's degree but I understood what you were saying there...)
“How addictive?”
Oh lord...that is just all kinds of brilliant! :)
:D
I love writing Ianto and Gwen together. They compliment each other so well. I think it might be because I see Jack and Gwen as being very similar and Ianto and Rhy as having similarities - so the combination just seems to fit.
I feel I shall have to write fic soon about Andy being awesome - because he is.
Lovely fic though, again like some of the people above I think Ianto and Gwen work really well together.
Thanks for the comment and sorry it's taken me so long to get round to replying.
I do agree with you that Torchwood London seems like a typical graduate employee - and I fully suspect that they trawl universities for future employees (especially as in the Who universe I imagine they get through a lot). But I don't think they'd insist upon a degree - primarily because one of the top qualities they would be looking for is the ability to cope with the alien stuff they're dealing with, to think quickly and to keep secrets - as none of these are limited strictly to university students, I think Torchwood would offer a more flexible job route. I particularly think they would take advantage of anyone who had experienced something alien and reacted well, it seems to me like not doing so would be a huge waste - so I was surprised that a lot of people presumed Ianto couldn't have got a job withough a degree.
Also - Ianto and Gwen are a winning team combination
Thanks again
I laughed the whole way through this story. Poor Andy! And as someone who used to teach in the British higher education system, Ianto's defence of Swindon College's external accreditation made me grin very wryly indeed. I almost lost it completely, though, at the reference to compulsory bisexuality and Ianto offering to help Andy out with that one. Completely hysterical, and I loved it.
